nicole reynolds - poems

fourth of july

durango fireworks are shot from a cemetery
i watch the explosions
and think of the same
sounds bouncing off of city buildings
echoing in my ears, my chest
my white room
my purgatory
explosions go off here
and there
and there
and there
bombs and gunfire
right through black
and white skin
in a place so far away
i think of a veteran freaking out
in her empty house
the sounds are like others she's
heard before
these sounds are like others
for me
they look so gorgeous, those fireworks
but the sounds beat in my body like war
drums, like symphony timpani
in the forte climax
my nose is bleeding
where's my camel bell, spanish plates,
wooden barrel, my freedom day
without bomb reminders i need a drink
3200 fireworks today
i'll soak them in my bones
so i have something to conquer
the veteran can't escape indepedence day
no one ever will
